Permit

Got it. Today. Boo. Yah.

  1. Congratulations! Have fun. Driving is a weird progression. You have to get the permit and then practice driving skills to get a license. But no matter how well you learn the basics and no matter how careful you are, no one is a safe driver when you first get your license. That takes a lot of driving time over the years. Driving is something you get incrementally better at over time. People think that young drivers are bad, and there ARE some aspects of being young and having an physiologically immature brain that contribute to driving dangerously and having accidents. However, the real truth is that NEW drivers are bad drivers, no matter how old/"mature" they are when they first get their driver's license. Most auto accidents happen in the first few years that a person is driving.

I'm not trying to scare you - being able to drive is GREAT! But,...

Didn't you say you were a skier? Driving is like being forced to navigate aggressive black diamond runs when you are first learning to ski. You CAN get down the mountain without killing yourself, but you have to think carefully and plan every move. I'd bet you don't have to do that any more. You just have to make it down the mountain in one piece a few hundred times and it becomes as natural as breathing.

Good luck and enjoy the independence!
